On Thursday 6 May 2021, residents in Suffolk will go to the polls to have their say on who represents them at Suffolk County Council and who will represent them as the new Suffolk Police and Crime Commissioner. Some residents will also be voting in Town/Parish and District by-elections and Neighbourhood Planning referenda.

The elections may be a way off, but we are already making plans to help residents stay safe while casting their vote.

There are several ways for registered electors to have a say at the elections in May:

  • vote in person at the polling station;
  • vote by post; or
  • appoint a trusted person to vote on your behalf, known as a proxy vote.

With the impact of COVID-19 likely to be felt in the coming months, we want to raise awareness of the option to voting by post rather than visiting the polling station.

If you would like to vote by post rather than at the polling station, then please print out, complete and return a postal vote application form. Please visit www.eastsuffolk.gov.uk for details. Completed applications can be photographed or scanned and emailed to us. If you are unable to print the form, you can request a form to be sent to you by post. Please email elections@eastsuffolk.gov.uk.

The deadline for postal vote applications is 20 April, so please don’t delay.

For those that would still prefer to vote in person, we can assure you that COVID-19 secure procedures will be put in place at every polling station. You can expect to see many of the measures that have been used over recent months, such as the use of hand sanitiser, floor markings and social distancing. Face coverings will be required (for those who are not exempt) and we would encourage you to bring your own pen or pencil.
